What Are The Pros And Cons Of Fitness DVDs?

By James Woolley

At the start of January many people, particularly women, start to think about losing weight and getting in shape. For that reason numerous fitness DVDs are released at this time and they are always extremely popular. So what are the pros and cons of these exercise DVDs?

Well let's start off with the pros first of all. The major benefit is that if you buy one of these DVDs and perform the routine on a regular basis as recommended, then you should start to see those excess pounds coming off. The routines provided are usually about an hour long and are very high intensity which means you will burn off lots of calories each time you perform the routine. Plus a lot of these DVDs are split up into sections so you can choose the workouts that suit you so you don't necessarily need to very fit to start off because you can start gradually.

Although it's usually top celebrities who put their names to these fitness DVDs, each workout has usually be created by a top fitness expert so you know that most of these workouts will be effective if you follow them correctly and do them regularly. There are no excuses for not performing them regularly to be honest because they are designed to be done from the comfort of your home, which is another major benefit.

The main alternative to these home-based workouts is paying for an expensive gym membership and working out at the gym. This can be quite intimidating and quite daunting, particularly if you are heavily overweight because gyms are full of extremely fit athletes and wannabe bodybuilders and it's hard not to be self-conscious in this environment. Thankfully these fitness DVDs create a much cheaper and much more convenient alternative, whilst being just as effective in a lot of cases.

The major drawback of exercise DVDs is that if you only own one or two of these DVDs then it can become quite monotonous and boring performing the same workouts over and over again. A lot of these routines are now more enjoyable than they used to be thanks to dance-based workouts and high tempo dance tracks, but you can still become bored of them. However if you purchase several of these workouts and maybe perform them on rotation then this shouldn't be too much of a problem.

On the whole though the pros far outweigh the cons. Fitness DVDs are undoubtedly one of the most effective ways of losing weight. Of course if you combine these workouts with a healthier diet as well, then you should hopefully achieve your weight loss targets, all from the comfort of your own home.
