6 Simple Ways To Improve Your Fitness

There are simple ways to improve your fitness. Expensive gym memberships and personal trainers are not requirements to get fitter. That doesn't mean that personal trainers cannot be helpful, just that they are not necessary for most people.

Personal Fitness Training Blog | Fit411Too many people make it too complicated. Then they use that complication as a reason for not doing it. Simple does not mean easy. It can be difficult to start anything new; to change your way of thinking, and that is certainly something that has to happen if you want to affect your level of fitness.

Here are 6 things you can do to start improving your fitness right away.

Eat Better

It can be daunting to overhaul your entire diet. This is overwhelming for some people. Especially if their current eating habits are really bad. The good news is that even small improvements make a difference. Baby steps in the right direction count.

Decide on one or two changes that need to happen. Maybe it has to do with a particular food item, like soda or french fries, or maybe the way in which you are eating. Perhaps you eat too late at night, which is bad for digestion, or you eat too infrequently. Numerous small meals throughout the day are much better for you than one or two big meals, even if the calorie count is the same.

An all or nothing way of thinking will keep you from making valuable, simple changes to your diet. Keep practicing and before you know it, eating right will become a habit.

Start Walking

A great thing about walking is that it can be done by virtually anyone without the need to purchase special gear. You will want to wear comfortable shoes but it could even be done without shoes. This is not the case if you want to start running.

Running is great exercise but many people underestimate the fitness benefits of walking.

You can set aside specific times in the day or week to go for long walks. You can also look for ways to add more walking to your daily routine. Park farther away from your destination. Get off the bus a stop or two early. Take the stairs instead of the elvator. These are popular ways to walk more throughout the day.

To get more from your walking increase the intensity. You will know this is happening because you will start to feel warmer and your breathing will get heavier. One way to get to this level of intensity is too simply walk faster. Another way is to come up with a challenging routine. Pick a route that will take you up and down some stairs or hills. If you cannot do this outside, or the weather will not allow it, find a building where you can climb the stairs. Keep in mind that stairclimbing can get very intense. Take some extra clothes with you if you are going to be doing this at work.

Play

Fitness is not all working out. We need to spend time playing. It is good for our mental health as well as our physical health. The basic point is to increase your overall level of activity. Take advantage of every opportunity to do this, including play. Take up tennis; throw frisbee with a friend; walk the golf course instead of riding in a cart; join the company softball team. Have some fun!

If participating in a sport is not something you want to do then simply find some kids to play with. You can benefit from chasing a few toddlers around the playground or playing a game of kickball with the neighborhood kids. Get out in the yard and play with your dog. Take the cat for a walk.

This level of activity will not be enough to really build muscle but anytime you can be active it is better than sitting on the couch. As your mindset changes to that of an active person it will become easier to add more intense exercise to your fitness regimen

Write it down

Research is clear. People who write down what they eat lose twice as much weight as those who do not. Keep a food journal. Similarly, those who write down what they are going to do tend to do it. Why not make fitness appointments for yourself? Put your walks or your play times in your planner. Stick to your plans. Keep track of your exercise in your food journal if you really want to make it simpler.

Another thing to write down are your goals. Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to increase the distance you can walk? Do you want to change a clothing size? Put your goal in words. Be specific. Write it down. It will help.

Read

We tend to become like those things we think about it. Become a student of health and fitness. Reading books and articles about various fitness topics or exercise will help you to change your thinking. As you educate yourself about exercise and nutrition it will also help you make better choices about what you are doing and eating.

Share

Finally, share what you are doing with a friend or family member. Get them involved in the changes you are making for yourself. Chances are they would like to do the same. A friend can be a great source of encouragement, and they will add an aspect of accountability to your efforts.

Getting fit does not have to be complicated or costly. There are many simple things you can do to improve your fitness. The simplest thing to do, but probably the hardest part, is getting started. Do it today.
